Web Applications

Gaysout.net was a social networking website built entirely by Shaun. It started from his university 'final year project' — which was to develop a social networking web application in Ruby on Rails — and expanded to include venues, events, calendars, 'Digg-style' voting, forums and live chat.

With over 500 members the website attracted a lot of attention, aided by trips to London and Brighton for the 'Pride' events sporting tee-shirts and postcards. Unfortunately, due to time restrictions, and the fact that there were only 2 people working on the project, it is currently offline. A video of the features will be available soon.

Timekeeper is a project being developed by Shaun in his free time to try and help with time management at his office. It is a web application built in Ruby on Rails.

The software currently includes entering hours spent on jobs which is then collated and displayed in graphs and tables which can be sorted by job, by person or by date. The software also differentiates between billable and non-billable (admin or internal) jobs.

Expansion is now heading towards total job management and more detailed reports.

A working demo will be available in the coming weeks.

A web application is more than just a website, it is a piece of software running on the cloud. This enables bespoke applications which can be accessed anywhere with an internet connection. I specialise in Ruby on Rails but have dabbled in several other languages in the past.

Content Management

Parker Harris was designed by Redink and developed by myself, including a CMS system developed by Richard Mason.

Parker Harris can log in and edit any of the pages, add exhibitions, awards and events and upload images to the slideshows.

A website with a built-in Content Management System (CMS) enables the client to go ahead and add news stories or change the text on their website. This empowerment gives the client a feeling of control which cannot be matched by other update methods.

HTML & CSS

HTML and CSS websites are built by Shaun from scratch, based on existing design by Redink. At every step of the way I work to ensure the code is semantic and valid, and the website matches the visual even on old browsers. Currently we test in Safari 2+, Firefox 2+, Opera 9, Internet Explorer 6, 7 and 8.

A handful of the websites I have built are listed below.

I code in HTML to the accordance of the web standards publicised by W3C. From initial designs in Photoshop or Quark I can re-create that vision in a way which is accessible to any internet-enabled device, displays consistently on all modern browsers and operating systems and is fast-loading and easy to update and maintain. See the most recent websites listed on Red ink's portfolio.
